Capturing Those Precious Early Days: The Best Time to Schedule Your Newborn Photography Session
Newborn Photography | Elk Grove, California
As a newborn photographer, I often get asked, “When is the best time to schedule a newborn session?” The answer isn’t one-size-fits-all—it really depends on the style you’re after, your baby’s temperament, and what kind of experience you want. While many photographers will tell you the session should happen within the first 10 days, others may extend that window to the first month. For me, it’s all about creating an experience that suits you and your newborn, keeping both of you comfortable and happy.
The Emotional Value of Newborn Photography
Newborn photos go beyond capturing adorable, sleepy poses—they capture a moment in time that is incredibly fleeting. Babies grow and change so quickly, and these early days are over before you know it. A well-timed newborn session ensures you have a tangible memory of these precious moments. They become heirlooms, treasured by you now and by your child as they grow older. Imagine looking back years from now at these photographs, remembering just how tiny and delicate they once were. It’s an emotional experience for every parent and one that becomes more valuable as time goes on.
Why Timing Matters: What Kind of Newborn Photos Do You Want?
Every baby and situation is unique. Some parents dream of those dreamy, sleepy newborn photos where the baby is curled up in cute props and soft wraps. Others prefer their little one to be awake, wide-eyed, and showing off those first expressions.
In my experience, if you’re after those classic, curled-up newborn photos, the optimal time is within the first two weeks. Babies tend to be sleepier and more malleable during this period, making it easier to pose them in those adorable, squishy poses without waking them up. I often find that a full, "milk-drunk" baby after a good feed is the perfect recipe for a peaceful session.
Of course, every session is unique, and sometimes, babies have their own plans! Some may get a bit gassy, fussy, or overstimulated. That’s okay—I always take cues from your baby and adjust the session accordingly, ensuring we capture those precious moments, whether they’re sleepy or awake.
What Happens If We Go Beyond the 2-Week Mark?
I’ve done beautiful sessions with babies older than two weeks, too! These sessions tend to be a bit more dynamic. As babies grow, they become more alert and start to stretch and move more, which means they might not stay in one pose for long. But there’s beauty in that as well—capturing those bright eyes and emerging personalities is just as memorable. While it might be harder to get those sleepy, posed shots, there’s something so special about a photo of a wide-eyed newborn looking around and beginning to explore the world.
Scheduling Your Session: My Approach
To make sure we’re prepared, I recommend scheduling your newborn session for about two weeks after your due date. This puts us in the optimal window for those dreamy, posed shots, but I’m always flexible! Once your little one arrives, we can adjust the session date if needed.
I find that morning sessions work best for newborns—they’re generally more relaxed and sleepier, which is perfect for those peaceful poses. By the afternoon, babies can get a little more stimulated and fussy, so I like to use that calm morning window to create a serene environment for both the baby and the parents.

Considering a Milestone Package?
Many of my clients love to continue documenting their baby's growth through milestone sessions. These sessions capture key stages like the 3-month smiles, 6-month sitting up, and 1-year cake smash moments. Each stage offers a unique opportunity to capture your baby's developing personality and the sweet, unforgettable moments that define their first year.
Let’s Capture Your Precious Moments!
I believe there’s no wrong time to capture your newborn’s early days. Even if it’s a little later than planned, or if you’re looking to document their growth through a milestone package, every stage of your baby’s life is precious and worth remembering.
As Dr. Seuss wisely said, “Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.” Don’t miss the chance to create those beautiful memories.
